What is Windows 10 End of Life?

Windows 10 End of Life (EOL) is when Microsoft stops providing technical support and updates for the Windows 10 operating system. So, your PC will no longer receive the updates that ensure it runs smoothly and stays secure.

When is EOL for Windows 10?

The official date is 14 October 2025. After this, support and security updates will stop for most people.

Why should Windows 10 EOL matter to me?

From 14 October 2025, you will no longer get free monthly security updates or patches, technical support or feature updates. This leaves you at risk of viruses, malware and cyber threats, plus poor system performance and functionality.

Will my Windows 10 computer stop working?

No, your computer will still work, and the software will continue to function, but your computer won’t receive security, app or feature updates – and you won’t be able to access technical support.

So, can I continue using Windows 10 after support ends?

Yes, you can continue using Windows 10, but you will no longer receive security, app or feature updates – plus Microsoft doesn’t recommend it. And the longer you use an unsupported operating system, the riskier it becomes.

What are Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for Windows 10?

Extended Security Updates are a Microsoft programme that you can pay for, which offers security updates for up to three years. However, there are several risks and disadvantages to delaying your upgrade.

How do I upgrade to Windows 11?

First of all, find out if your PC is eligible for a free upgrade by going to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update then clicking ‘Check for updates’.

If your PC isn’t compatible, you can choose one of the latest Windows 11 PCs which have new features, are designed to take advantage of the latest security and offer enhanced battery life.

How much does it cost to upgrade to Windows 11?

It’s free to upgrade PCs that are running Windows 10 version 22H2 and meet the minimum hardware specifications. Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select ‘Check for updates’ to check whether your PC is compatible.

Is Windows 11 available now?

Yes, you can upgrade to Windows 11 anytime, as this new version has been available since October 2021.

How can I transfer files and settings to a new computer?

Windows Backup makes it easy to save and transfer files, photos, apps, settings and log-in details for a straightforward and seamless transition.

What can I do with my old computer?

Microsoft trade-in and recycling programmes are available, enabling you to make some money whilst taking responsible, sustainable action.
